JCAC Statement on the Centre Pompidou x Jersey City

In early 2021, Jersey City and the New Jersey State Government decided to partner with the Pompidou Center for a Jersey City satellite in the Pathside Building, with the state allocating $24M towards the project.

While the oversight of the Pompidou is completely outside the purview of the JCAC, we have met with the administration and have been assured that we will be informed of next steps and given opportunities to advocate for local artists. Now that planning has begun, we are hopeful about the opportunities the Pompidou (with its expertise and world-renowned collection of art) can provide, for both local artists and the general public, by offering access to international art for all residents.

We intend to bring the community’s concerns to the City and advocate for our local artists to be involved. We are also advocating for free entry to the museum for all Jersey City residents and programming for students in the Jersey City Public Schools. We want all people in Jersey City to take full advantage of the benefits from this kind of financial investment and we are hopeful that the museum will also bring more attention to the world-class art that is already being made in our communities.
