Jersey City Poet Laureate

The Jersey City Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of the application process for the city’s next Poet Laureate. This prestigious position offers an exceptional opportunity for a talented poet to engage with the community, celebrate the literary arts, and contribute to the cultural vitality of Jersey City. 

The position of Poet Laureate for the City of Jersey City was established by a resolution of the City Council in 2018. The Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador for poetry, representing the artistic spirit of Jersey City while fostering public appreciation for the literary arts. This role involves a variety of responsibilities including: hosting readings, conducting workshops, and collaborating with local organizations to inspire and engage residents through the power of poetry. The term of service is two years, with an honorarium of $3000 per year.

Application Details:

Eligibility: Applicant must demonstrate a significant and meaningful tie to the Jersey City community for a minimum of 3 years. Applicant must be a current resident of Jersey City. Applicant must be at least 18 years old. Applicant must demonstrate a commitment to poetry through performance and/or publication.

Application Requirements: Interested poets are invited to submit a portfolio of their work, a personal statement detailing your journey as a poet, your inspirations, and what poetry means to you. Please include a current resume or CV and a letter of recommendation. Applications should also include a brief statement on what projects or initiatives you would implement to engage and create outreach towards the Jersey City community. 

Submission Deadline: All applications must be received by August 31, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered.

Selection Process:

A selection committee comprising former poet laureates, poetry faculty and representatives from the Jersey City Arts Council will review all applications.
