Molly Tigre: Live in the Parlour

  • 594 Palisade Avenue Jersey City, NJ, 07307 United States (map)

Molly Tigre mashes African music- especially the entrancing rhythms and melodies from Mali and Ethiopia- together with the adventurous and experimental leanings of some frightfully talented NYC musicians. Featuring the compositions of saxophonist Mitch
Marcus (Donovan, Gene Ween Band, Japonize Elephants) and bassist Ezra Gale (Aphrodesia, Super Hi-Fi), the diverse group also showcases saxophonist/flutist Chris Hiatt (Japonize Elephants), drummer Joe Abba (NYC Jazz Exchange) and percussionist
Kolipe Imbrahima Camara (National Dance Company of Guinea) for a sound that could only come from the melting pot of New York City. The band is equally at home playing for dancing crowds at world music and jam band festivals as well as the jazz club
environment.

The group's debut recording shows off the breadth of the group, from the sly wink to 70s Ethio-Jazz ("Ethiofreaks") to Sahara Desert Tuareg-groove ("Couscous Timbuktu") to Bollywood mix tapes ("Hello Bolly") and epic modern jazz-funk ("Why Not?").

Memorably described as "Ethiopian funk drinks a progressive jazz cocktail at Miles Davis' 1970's loft party", Molly Tigre is music for the body and mind.
