Loew's Jersey Theatre Tours

  • 54 Journal Square Plaza Jersey City, NJ, 07306 United States (map)

The Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre is a remarkable building in many ways, including its grand decor and epic size, the design and scale of its structure and mecahnical systems, and -- not least -- the ideal with which it was built: take the grandest architecure of European royalty and build it even bigger and better in America, but open it for everyone to enjoy.

It is quite literally the kind of building they don't make anymore.

But just as remarkable is its place in American cultural history and role for several generations as a definibng local icon.

And then there is the sage of how this once-cherished landmark was all-but forgotten and scheduled to be torn down, but was saved at the last minute by a grass roots movement which went on to become a community-based organization that used volunteers to renovate and reopen the shuttered Theatre when promised government support never materialized. The story continued when that same group took on the responsibility of reopenning and operating the Theatre as a non-profit arts center even though much more restoration work was still needed and no promoter or other organization was willing even to try.

And finally, there is the story of the ongoing struggle to both continue the restoration and also make sure that the landmark Theatre, which has now been embraced again by its community, continues to serve that community by presenting a diverse range of programming that offers something to most all interests and means to enjoy.

Come on along on one of our FREE tours to see and hear more about this amazing landmark!
